- Is Cellulite Hereditary?
-
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- QUESTION: I have three sisters, and they all suffer from the same problem as
- I do. We all have ugly cellulite, and we remember that our mother seemed to
- have it too, although in those days they didn't display as much flesh as we do
- today. Does this mean that the condition is all in our genes and there is
- nothing we can do about it? Just what is cellulite anyway? You have four
- very curious women sending in this question.
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- ANSWER: While there is no real evidence that a specific gene determines the
- presence of cellulite, it does appear to run in families. That might be
- explained by other inherited and environmental factors, like everyone eating a
- similar diet, probably one that is too rich in fats or calories. To
- understand the appearance of cellulite, you must first know about the anatomy
- of the skin. The fat cells are surrounded by a denser, firmer tissue called
- connective tissue which forms the "walls" that hold the structure of the skin
- in place. As you continue to put on weight, you build up the amount of fat in
- the fat cells, or produce more cells to contain the additional material. As
- the amount of fatty tissue increases it puffs up between the walls and forms
- the dimpled appearance you recognize as cellulite. Cellulite disappears as
- you lose weight and fatty tissue, or in extreme cases, where it is removed by
- a surgical process called liposuction.
